Businesses across the UK are seeing tangible benefits to staff engagement levels as they embrace the spirit of the London 2012 Olympics in the workplace
British businesses are starting to reap the rewards of a more engaged and motivated workforce as they embrace the buzz surrounding the London 2012 Olympic Games with one third putting in place a variety of fun and exciting activities. However, this means that two thirds of businesses are in danger of missing out on this once in a lifetime opportunity.
Research by Adecco, the official recruitment service provider of the London Olympics 2012, found that those businesses that have planned activities will see real benefits. Nearly one third (31%) of employees questioned believe that it will increase their levels of motivation, 42% said it would help with building teamwork and bonding with colleagues and one in ten felt they would have an increased sense of loyalty to their company.
Workers are so keen to get involved that they are readily prepared to give something back. One third (34%) of employees surveyed said they are prepared to take on more responsibility, 28% will work harder in order to free up time for fun and 17% are happy to be flexible with their working hours in order to take part in planned activity.
Over a quarter (28%) of workers recognise the opportunity that the London 2012 Games provides to inject some fun and excitement into the workplace, something many businesses are still not recognising. Of those that do have plans in place, 36% will be taking part in their own sporting activities, 35% plan to watch events live and 32% have event incorporated the Games into their work targets.
Steven Kirkpatrick, Managing Director, Adecco said, “In this economic environment it’s sometimes easy to ignore engagement activities, assume they are too expensive or too much of a diversion from the job that needs to be done. We simply don’t believe this is the case. With very little investment of money or time you can undertake some really fun and motivational Olympic activities and our research shows that this can have a really beneficial impact on employees and therefore on the business itself.”
Adecco will be monitoring the workplace buzz around the London 2012 Olympic Games over the coming weeks.
