London 2012 gives UK job market a much needed boost
This year, we’ll see London play host to the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and with it, the biggest ever peacetime recruitment initiative. Whether you’re a sports enthusiast, as patriotic as they come, or none of the above, this is big business for the UK jobs market ― before, during and even after the event.
With gradual growth in job creation predicted throughout the year ― particularly in the HR and IT sectors ― jobseekers are likely to witness a welcome boost after hiring slowed considerably towards the end of 2011; with a reduction in both temporary and permanent vacancies seen in December.
This was particularly notable in the retail sector where, despite the festive season, there was a dramatic drop in the use of temporary workers. But our latest Job Watch figures suggest that 2012 could be a more positive year for the retail sector, as permanent opportunities increased in the first month of the new year.
Despite the expected rise in vacancies, it is however important to remember that competition for roles will remain high across all sectors. And, with many companies still under the weight of lingering financial pressure ― making it imperative to recruit the right person for each role ― hiring managers are likely to be picky around specific skills and experience. So, be realistic about what you have to offer, and adopt an attitude of flexibility when it comes to the jobs that are available, as work experience will stand you in good stead for future opportunities.
Jobseekers should also be looking for innovative ways to set themselves apart from an overcrowded market, and London 2012 ― expected to generate tens of thousands of new roles, from catering and tourism, through to security and cleaning; as well as a great many technical and professional roles ― will provide the UK workforce with the perfect opportunity to develop new skills for the future.
But if you are unable to land a Games-time role, fear not. Businesses will need to provide extensive cover during the Olympics for staff that are either involved in, or watching the Games. So, if you’re a temp looking for work this summer, hold off on that holiday until after the Games.
Steven Kirkpatrick, Managing Director, Adecco, commented:
“We see the London 2012 Games as a catalyst for change and a reminder that no matter what is going on in the wider economic climate, there are always opportunities to do something new and innovative. The jobs created by the Games will provide individuals with the potential to apply for jobs outside of their usual industry, helping them to explore new interests and gain new skills and experience.”
