Starbucks to create 5000 new jobs over the next five years

16/12/11

Coffee house giant Starbucks has brought some hope to the UK jobs market by announcing the creation of 5000 new jobs over the next five years.

The news is seen as a particular boost for youth unemployment as around half of Starbucks’ baristas are aged 24 and under.

Many of the new jobs will be based in Starbucks’ drive-through outlets as the coffee chain works to increase this side of its business. It currently operates nine drive-through shops and plants to increase this number to 200 in order to serve the UK’s army of car-based commuters.

Starbucks will also add 100 more high street coffee shops to its portfolio and this is where the rest of the new jobs will be located. Prime Minister David Cameron said: “This is a great boost for the British economy and the local communities that will directly benefit from these openings.

“I welcome Starbucks’ announcement and I am glad to see continued investment and job creation in the private sector.”

Since starting in Seattle in 1981, Starbucks has expanded to 9000 company-owned stores and around 8000 licensed outlets across the world.
