Job Title: Catering Assistant


Location: Canterbury, Kent


Salary: £18,278


Hours: 37 hours per week - working 5 out of 7 (will include weekends) between the hours of 8am-6pm (could be as late as 11.30pm if working in the bar but rotas are given in advance)

Purpose of Role


To work as part of a team in the food and beverage outlets across the site providing catering and hospitality services. The post holder will need to have a flexible approach to meet the expectations of providing a consistent and quality service to students, staff and visitors.


Key responsibilities within your new role would be to:



  • To assist in providing consistent and professional customer service and quality food and beverages across the catering outlets for staff, students and visitors.

  • To assist in the wash up when necessary and clean and maintain coffee machines.

  • To be aware of menu boards and daily specials and contents to be able to assist customers with advice and guidance when required.

  • Re-stock fridges display units and counters as required.

  • Preparation and cleaning of counters and any areas in the catering outlets and remove waste when required.

  • Operate the point of sale system for payments and be responsible for taking cash during the shift.

  • Attend and give input at team meetings to add continuous improvement to the service.

  • Assist with other duties as instructed by the Team Leader and Head Chef.

  • Face to face communication with students, staff and visitors.

  • Support other departments if and when required.

  • Report any faults of issues with vending machines or catering equipment to management.

  • Share ideas for cost saving, improvements and innovative suggestions.

  • Understand and interpret hospitality event sheets.

  • Organisation of materials and equipment to be on hand during service.

  • Load and unload catering vehicles.


Experience and skills required for this position:



  • Weekend, evening or bank holiday working may be required as part of this role.

  • Basic Food Hygiene Certificate, not essential

  • Good communication skills

  • Commitment to good customer service / customer care

  • A team player

  • Ability to work well under pressure

  • Ideally you will have a full, clean UK licence but not essential
