A local authority within Croydon are recruiting for a candidate to provide administrative and court support to HM Coroner, Clerk to Coroner and Metropolitan Police Coroner's officers for the South London Coroner's consortium to enable HM Coroner to deliver a high quality coronial service.



Daily tasks will include:



  • Answering the telephone and directing calls to the appropriate person, dealing with general inquiries in an extremely busy and pressurised environment (this demands a good knowledge of what information can be given and to whom).

  • Dealing with bereaved families, representatives and professionals on behalf of the Coroner and his Officers; including GP's, hospital consultants, pathologists, police, foreign office, lawyers, insurance companies, other agencies and organisations ensuring that these are dealt with accurately and in a timely fashion within the legal framework.

  • Arranging the allocation of sudden death referrals to Coroner's Officers to ensure workload is fairly distributed and any difficulties are reported to the Coroner's Service Manager in a timely fashion. Production of 'Out of England' requests to allocate to relevant coroner's officer for approval and where necessary returning to Funeral Directors for corrections or amendments.

  • Attending to visitors, including funeral directors collecting disposal paperwork. Dealing with and assessment of post coming into the service. Process and respond promptly to incoming communications (post, telephone, fax, email and face to face), accurate message taking, copying and distribution of information as necessary.

  • Ensure outgoing mail and despatches are dealt within the required timescales.

  • Complete the relevant paperwork and update the coroner's system after the inquest, and assist families with information to register the death. Assisting coroner's officers and administration manager in preparing bundles of documents (including scanning), and sending to interested persons and Assistant Coroners where necessary.

  • Ensuring public notices regarding forthcoming hearings are posted at the front door to the Court. Deal with local and international media enquiries in line with all relevant policies and procedures to ensure that they are referred to the appropriate person for a response
