The purpose of the role is to develop and implement issue and incident specific media strategies, often in liaison with partner agencies, in order to generate accurate, balanced and positive publicity to help reduce crime and enhance public confidence.The main responsibilities of the role are:

  • Assess information to ensure an open and transparent service is provided and decide which information should be disclosed for legal or operational reasons.

  • Provide media updates on incidents and crimes

  • Train and support staff to ensure the organisation is represented appropriately in its communications with the media.

  • Provide strategic and tactical communications advice and guidance to officers and staff.

  • Deliver a comprehensive media monitoring / horizon scanning service to ensure both Forces are alert to news stories and that it maximises opportunities to generate positive publicity.

  • Utilise a variety of different news channel - social media, community websites, Force websites etc

  • Maintain a comprehensive records management system to meet legislative requirements (e.g. disclosure) and ensure staff operate effectively and efficiently.

  • Work closely with both OPCC offices to coordinate and support press activity.

  • Review social media accounts from a news perspective

  • Deliver effective and timely engagement to all stakeholders

  • Attendance at strategic meetings to provide advice and guidance

  • Look for opportunities to broadcast and own corporate messages, using innovation and technology.

  • Build effective relationships with journalists and editors.

  • Familiar with Force systems to provide factual information on incidents without bias or opinion.

  • Organise media conferences and arrange interviews and press releases for the media.

  • Undertake on-call responsibilities as required

  • Manage media relations during major incidents and operations.

  • Make best use of 'direct-to-audience' and digital communications, ensuring issues are manages and not overly reliant on distribution of information via the media.

  • Engage effectively with the public, media and partners using a variety of social media channels

  • Update public on outcomes of operational activity

  • Protect and enhance the Force reputations both on digital platforms and in traditional media.

  • Support officers and staff in a variety environments including carrying out media interviews, providing briefings, court attendance and assisting victims and their families.
