An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Noise and Nuisance Officer to join a public sector organisation based in East London. The role is a temporary role initially for 3-6 months.

The role will undertake a range of professional and specialist duties within an interdisciplinary team and to concentrate on the investigation and control of noise from all sources including domestic, commercial, industrial and entertainment premises. The role will provide a service to residents who complain about statutory nuisances that includes enforcement, advisory and information actions.

The successful applicant will have previous experience of the enforcement of noise and statutory nuisance. The successful candidate will also have a degree of equivalent in Environmental Health or Diploma of the Institute of Acoustics.

On a rota basis the post holder will be required to work a minimum of seven nights a month as part of their normal duties. These duties will be carried out according to an agreed four week shift pattern.

Key duties will include:

  • Investigate complaints, referrals and other enquiries where these arise and ensure compliance with appropriate legislation, guidance through a range of enforcement interventions, including enforcement, education and advice

  • Review existing procedures and practices within the specialist area, making recommendations and implementing

  • Plan and carry out surveys, projects and work schedules

  • To undertake enforcement duties that include the preparation of statutory notices and provide all necessary information and evidence to facilitate legal proceedings and appear as a witness for the organisation in legal proceedings, tribunal, enquiries, etc.

  • Assess changes in enforcement techniques, standards, statutory codes of practice, legislative proposals/consultations and technical advances. Prepare reports, recommending changes in procedures, purchase of testing equipment, fieldwork programmes and budgetary implications arising from them

  • On a rota basis the post holder will be required to work out of hours to provide an out of hours noise service to the community

  • Undertake sound insulation tests and noise at work assessments

  • Provide expert evidence on noise in tribunals, enquiries or legal proceedings as necessary
