The post will be office based as and when required. Expectation of 2 days a week.


To administer the corporate and pensioner's payrolls on a monthly basis, ensuring remuneration is recorded accurately, and in accordance with HMRC regulations and best practice.


To deal with and resolve complex queries from employees and requests from third parties in a professional and efficient manner.


Responsible for the accurate and timely payments to employees and pensioners in accordance with contractual terms and conditions of employment and statutory legislation.


Responsible for interpretation of legislation to ensure the correct application of statutory payments and deductions, complex instructions received from the business and what course of action to take to satisfactorily resolve queries.


Decisions made around the timeliness of payroll data processing are key to the role



This will involve:



  • Interpreting and validating complex instructions received within payroll.

  • Accurate and timely recording of all employee permanent and temporary changes onto the payroll system, ensuring statutory legislation, National and Local conditions of service are met.

  • Calculating, validating and recording of starter details, including allowances, pro-rata payments and LGPS pension scheme banding.

  • Calculating salary changes including back pay and pro-rata payment as required.

  • Validating and recording high volume overtime claims.

  • Calculating and validating occupational and statutory payments and maintaining appropriate records (eg. Maternity, paternity, sickness etc.)

  • Calculating final payments for leavers including holiday pay.

  • Processing of sickness absence and unpaid leave.

  • Processing net deductions - Union fees, loans, court orders, voluntary deductions.

  • Performing audit checks on input for accuracy and compliance.

  • Examining and acting upon all payroll exception reports.

  • Calculating and processing manual payments.



  1. Key requirements:


    • Responsible for processing monthly payroll data for a proportion of c. 4000 employees using Oracle Fusion.

    • Ensuring remuneration is recorded accurately, adhering to deadlines and in accordance with legislation, national and local conditions of service which include varying terms, including but not limited to: leavers; changes to terms and conditions of employment; salary sacrifice; pension contributions; statutory payments and deductions; court orders; voluntary deductions; overpayments.

    • Checking of monthly exception reports.

    • Manual calculations (gross to net, statutory payments etc.)

    • Comprehensive working knowledge of UK Payroll Legislation, including pensions;

    • Experience of high volume, complex payrolls in a demanding environment;

    • Ability to work under pressure, maintaining accuracy whilst meeting tight deadlines;

    • Ability to quickly absorb, interpret and analyse complex information.

    • Dealing with and resolving high volume of queries from employees in a professional and efficient manner



Calculating, recovering and managing over-payments ensuring compliance with legislation and in accordance with policy, including YTD tax/NI adjustments.



  • Maintaining and archiving of payroll data and information ensuring compliance with GDPR.

  • Producing and distributing P45s, duplicate payslips, P60s, P11Ds as required.

  • Covering payroll team member's workload during absence/holidays.


Assisting with other tasks as reasonably requested by Senior Payroll Controller or Payroll Manager.
