Job Title: Production Technician


Reports To: Production Team Leader


Division: ATG/Chromatography & Mass Spec Division


Position Location: Runcorn, UK



Job Purpose:


To manufacture, test and quality assure specific chromatography products to meet the required output/throughput and quality levels. To carry out in-process development as necessary to improve production processes and increase efficiency. To liaise with the Team Leader in order to plan day-to-day operations and achieve the required levels of quantity, quality and cost of production.


Job Context:


The business unit manufactures a wide range of Hypersil silicas and Hypercarb (porous graphitic carbon) as well as various HPLC, GC, GCMS and SPE packing materials. These products are sold to a worldwide market made up predominantly of pharmaceutical companies, universities, hospitals, government institutions and a wide range of industrial companies in varying fields of activities.



The manufacture of the silica includes complex & hazardous chemical processes and use of analytical testing instruments as well as interpretation of results, problem solving and process improvement.



Key Responsibilities:




  • Production and Testing

    1. Carry out production processes in strict accordance with prescribed manufacturing procedures and practices with due regard to appropriate health & safety, quality management and good lab practices.

    2. Undertake test procedures as required in order to ensure product quality standards are achieved.





  • Working with the Team Leader and/or colleagues, identify and implement innovative ways to reduce process cycle times and increase yield & batch right-first-time performance.



  1. Maintain a safe, clean and tidy laboratory and work space.

  2. Monitor material inventory, including use of a fork lift truck and controlling storage & disposal of waste products.

  3. Use, maintain & troubleshoot a broad range of production laboratory equipment including analytical instruments, reactors & classifiers in line with SOPs and other requirements.




  • Quality and Record Keeping

  • Be familiar with and follow the quality management system (ISO9001) requirements, including relevant SOPs such as change control & operating work instructions.

  • Use the non-conformance system and apply knowledge & experience to propose appropriate actions for non-compliant material, in-line with the quality management system.



  • Ensure that accurate & timely records are maintained for each stage of the process, understand why these records are kept & the implications of any inaccuracies or omissions and interpret data as required.

  • Record use of materials and stock levels accurately, including at month-end.

  • Problem Solving and General Responsibilities



Using chemical knowledge & experience, identify, take ownership and implement process improvements, for example targeting improved yield or quality..


Take responsibility for developing and extending skills and knowledge of media &/or bonded production.


Contribute proactively to improvement projects designed to improve testing, production processes, product quality or to introduce new products.


Adhere to and help prepare & maintain health & safety procedures and risk assessments; utilise 'SOOS' to improve working practices and conditions.



Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:



  • GCSE or equivalent (grade C or above) in Maths, English & Science.

  • Industrial or laboratory experience is advantageous.

  • Knowledge and understanding of chemistry in general.

  • Knowledge of Health & Safety regulations, COSHH requirements, ISO9001 quality procedures and good manufacturing practices.

  • Ability to take responsibility, work on own initiative and meet deadlines as well as working as part of a team maintaining a high level of communication and mutual support.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability and willingness to acquire new knowledge and skills and take ownership of personal development.

  • Basic PC skills, in particular Excel.
