Our client are a forward thinking, specialist joinery and construction supplier who have a passion for people. They are based in the Heart of Peterborough and are looking for an experienced buyer to come and join the busy department.

Position Overview

This is an energetic, multi-functional, fast moving, responsible but pivotal office based role in the company. You must have a good level of IT skills (inc Excel), have an eye for detail and be accurate with figures. You will deal with a relatively large volume of day to day ordering, working to not only supplier but also client deadlines. An expected spend budget is set monthly and a bi-monthly report required.

You must be an effective negotiator using the telephone, email and face to face. You must be able to build effective relationships with suppliers, able to communicate regularly with the Marketing Department to discuss promotional activity and also with the Sales Department to provide updates regarding supplier pricing and new products.

You will be expected to create and place orders, ensure acknowledgements received and correctly matched and then chase late deliveries and back orders to ensure you always maintain a high level of customer service. You will also need to liaise with both the relevant sales team member and the client to keep them up to date as required. Any supplier invoice discrepancies will also fall within the remit of this role.

Person Requirements

  • At least 2 yrs experience in purchasing/negotiating preferably in construction or joinery

  • Interest in Joinery or hardware is desirable

  • Proven negotiating record

  • Strong Interpersonal skills

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication

  • Hardworking, Responsible and dependable

  • Good time keeping

  • Excellent IT skills - Especially Excel

Key Roles and responsibilities

  • Forecast levels of demand for services and products

  • Keep constant check of stock levels and develop the automation of the process using the current software system

  • Conduct research to ascertain the best products and suppliers in terms of best value, delivery schedule, quality and service

  • Liaise between suppliers, manufacturers, relevant internal departments and customers

  • Build and maintain good relationships with new and existing suppliers

  • Understand production constraints, lead times and seasonal demand increments

  • Negotiate and agree contracts, monitoring the quality of service provided

  • Keep contract files and use them as reference for the future

  • Liaise seamlessly with both sales and marketing departments to ensure a flow of information regarding special offers, new products and any other necessary information

  • Take responsibility for the purchase from negotiation to order placement, acknowledgement, delivery follow up and correct invoicing.

Hours Full Time, 07:00am - 17:00pm (1 hour lunch)

Holiday 30 days including public holidays

Salary £25,000 - £30,000 / Year depending on experience plus bonus scheme

Probation Six months
