Our Client, a leading college, are currently recruiting for a Research and Business Contracts Manager who will be expected to provide expert advice and guidance to senior academic staff and professional services colleagues on all matters pertaining to research and commercial contracts.

  • Hours: 9am-5pm, 35 hours per week

  • Duration: 3 months

  • Pay Rate: £22-25 per hour


Job Description:



  • Working with the Head of Research Contracts and Due Diligence, Director of Research Administration, Head of Knowledge Transfer and Impact, and the Head of RVC Business / CEO of the centre to establish strong relationships with potential collaborators and funders.

  • Where appropriate, accompanying academic staff to meetings with potential collaborators and/or funders, with a view to promoting good practice in contract negotiation from the outset

  • Drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts and similar documents (such as material transfer agreements), ensuring that the activity has been costed in accordance with College guidelines; and that risks and conflicts are identified and appropriately managed.

  • Ensuring that contractual obligations are understood by the parties involved, and are achievable within the context of the work programme agreed between the parties.

  • Supporting academic staff in project meetings, where guidance is required on particularly complex or sensitive issues relating to a contract.

  • Contributing to the delivery of training activities and written guidance for academic staff and researchers, on the topic of building sustainable relationships with business, including large corporates and small- and medium-sized enterprises.

  • Contribution to the organisation, preparation and delivery of training workshops and commercial showcase events.


Essential skills/Experience:



  • Experience of negotiating contracts with a range of public- and private sector partners.

  • A good grasp of UK and EU contract law, including its structure, terminology and practice.

  • Graduate in a life sciences or legally related discipline.

  • Strong analytical skills, and the ability to interpret complex information and provide clear recommendations to senior colleagues.

  • Excellent communication skills including a clear and precise writing style.

  • Experience of working in a team and balancing conflicting priorities in order to meet tight deadlines.

  • Strong presentation and networking skills.

  • The ability to build good working relationships with, and to gain the respect and confidence of, academic staff and other professionals.


Desirable:



  • Experience of working with researchers in a Higher Education setting, and awareness of the research impact agenda.

  • Completion of PraxisUnico Research Contracts course, or similar.

  • The ability to identify potential funding opportunities, including sources of capital/infrastructure funding.
